We proudly say that India is a ‘Secular’ country… In fact many other countries claim the same…
But then how many of them Really understand the actual meaning of being Secular?
As per the various dictionaries online:
They all state a definition of secularism as “a policy of avoiding entanglement between government and religion”… “The view that religious considerations should be excluded from civil affairs or public education”…
Now that sounds fine to an extent… But when asked any member of our government or for that matter even a common man, the only definition I get is:
“Giving equal status and rights to all the religions“… Yup Indian government does that very well… So what’s the big deal, u may ask…
Well, I’ll now come to my POV…
They say, equality of religions is secularism… but tell me something, is a country (or society) made of religions? Oh, but I thought its made of people !!!
So what about the equality of people? Has anybody in the damned government ever thought about that? U give equal status to the practically non-existent religion… but with all the rights u treat each existing individual differently…
Is that really secularism?
